Anthropic admits its AI model Claude is being exploited for ransomware, extortion, and recruitment fraud, highlighting the growing risks in cybersecurity.

AI Tools Weaponized by Cybercriminals, Warns Anthropic

Anthropic has confirmed that its AI model Claude has been weaponized by hackers in several high-profile cyberattacks. Criminal groups exploited Claude to develop ransomware, automate phishing schemes, and even conduct employment fraud for North Korean state-backed operations.

According to cybersecurity experts, the misuse of AI tools lowers the barrier for cybercrime, allowing even inexperienced actors to launch sophisticated attacks. In one case, Claude was used to generate fully functional ransomware that was later sold on dark web forums. Other reports detail how the model assisted attackers in bypassing security systems and coordinating extortion campaigns against healthcare and government institutions.

Anthropic responded by banning accounts linked to malicious activity and tightening its safeguards. However, experts warn that the rapid pace of AI adoption is reshaping the threat landscape faster than regulations and defenses can adapt—raising urgent questions about governance, ethics, and responsibility in the AI era.
